Foundation Coffee Co.

Mobile Ordering App Usability Testing | Team Project (4 Designers)

Overview

As part of a four-person team, I helped design and evaluate a usability test plan for Foundation Coffee Co., a beachside coffee shop expanding to multiple locations. The goal was to develop and test a mobile ordering prototype that improved efficiency, effectiveness, and user satisfaction compared to competitors.

Problem

As Foundation Coffee Co. expanded, they needed a mobile ordering experience that was:

  • Faster than competitor apps

  • Easy to customize orders

  • Simple to navigate

  • Visually aligned with their beachside brand identity

Competitive analysis revealed that while most coffee apps offered similar core features (mobile ordering, rewards, customization), users still struggled with cluttered layouts, slow ordering flows, and confusing navigation.

Research & Design Process

We conducted competitive benchmarking and usability testing to identify gaps in existing apps and validate improvements in our prototype.

  • Performed competitive analysis of existing coffee ordering apps

  • Identified common features and user pain points

  • Defined usability metrics (completion time, error rate, satisfaction rating)

  • Established null and alternative hypotheses

  • Designed a structured task plan for ordering and customizing coffee

  • Conducted moderated usability testing sessions

  • Recorded task time, errors, and satisfaction scores

  • Analyzed results and compared performance against competitors
